Bill Spurlin presents... "Raising honey bees as a supplemental cash crop"

Bill will begin with a discussion of keeping costs in check by reviewing best purchasing options, how to get free bees, and options for woodenware.  The majority of the presentation will focus on methods of harvesting, extracting, and selling honey, and other ways to earn income from the bees such as selling nucs and/or queens, and other products of the hive – wax, pollen and propolis.

Bio: Bill grew up on a farm in Sullivan County, IN.  After moving to Ohio and Kentucky during his career as a machinist, he returned to his hometown in 2002.  In returning to his roots, Spurlin Homestead Farm was born. In addition to having a large garden, fruit trees, grape vines, and blackberry vines, meat rabbits, chickens, sheep, a variety of herbs, and bees are raised on the farm. Bill and his wife are vendors at their local Farmer’s Market, and they serve on the board of directors for the market. Bill is an advanced Indiana Master Naturalist (IMN) and is the Program Coordinator for the Sullivan County IMN.  Bill is an avid survivalist and teaches survival skills classes.  He worked for the State of Indiana in the  Department of Corrections and the Department of Natural Resources until he retired in 2022.  Bill can be reached through his Spurlin Homestead Farm Facebook page, or by email at [email protected].
